Short step-by-step guide for installing VMware server on an Arch Linux System.
Package version may differ on your system.
1.) Download files from AUR :
Download "vmware-server-modules" from AUR
Download "vmware-server" from AUR
2.) Unpack files :
[user@workstation]$ tar -xvf vmware-server-modules.tar.gz
[user@workstation]$ tar -xvf vmware-server.tar.gz
3.) Development environment :
(install if missing)
[root@workstation]$ pacman -S base-devel
4.) Make vmware-server-modules package :
NOTE! Must be run as root user!
NOTE! Install dependencies if they are missing!
[user@workstation]$ cd vmware-server-modules
[root@workstation]$ makepkg --asroot
4a.) Install vmware-server-modules :
[root@workstation]$ pacman -U vmware-server-modules-1.0.4_56528-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz
5.) Make vmware-server package :
NOTE! Install dependencies if they are missing!
[user@workstation]$ cd vmware-server
[user@workstation]$ makepkg
6.) Install vmware-server :
[root@workstation]$ pacman -U vmware-server-1.0.4_56528-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
Message from pacman :
>>> You need to configure VMware Server by invoking /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl.
>>> Also, you should add vmware to the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf.
7.) Configure vmware-server
(maybe restart before config. I had to!)
[root@workstation]$ /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
8.) Enable vmware server on startup
Edit /etc/rc.conf and add "vmware" to daemons array
